Renowned local architect Preston Bradshaw designed this structure in the first part of the 1920’s. The Coronado Hotel was born in 1926 after three years and nearly a million dollars in construction.
The building features Spanish Revival terra cotta detailing, custom plasterwork and intricate crown moldings throughout ornate lobbies and a cavernous ballroom. Bradshaw, who served as project architect as well as owner, oversaw both phases of construction for The Coronado. Bradshaw’s involvement insured seamless consistency between the first phase, (the main building), and phase two, (the adjacent 15-story tower).
The Coronado served as St. Louis’ premiere hotel and apartment complex through the 1960’s. Noteworthy guests of the hotel included Rudolph Valentino, Harry Truman, Charles Lindgergh, Queen Marie of Romania, Mel Torme, Tony Bennett and St. Louis Browns Hall of Famers.
Saint Louis University later purchased the Coronado for student housing until 1986 when an out-of-town developer purchased the building and left it to sit vacant for fifteen years.
Restoration St. Louis rescued the building in 2001.
In 2002, The Coronado was reborn into Midtown’s premier destination featuring luxury apartments, three penthouses, offices, a grand ballroom (operated by
Steven Becker Fine Dining), meeting facility and two top-notch restaurants, (
Chuy Arzola's and
Nadoz Café ).
